You’re cordially invited to attend our upcoming Chamber of Commerce monthly luncheon on Tuesday, May 7th.

We have a very special program we will be hosting.
Kentucky Chautaqua Presents, Harland “Colonel” Sanders

Kentucky Chautauqua has brought to life more than 70 famous people from Kentucky’s past. Chautauqua performers travel to schools and community organizations throughout the state delivering historically accurate dramatizations of Kentuckians who made valuable contributions.

Although he is most well-known for the 11 herbs and spices that made Kentucky Fried Chicken famous world-wide, Harland “Colonel” Sanders’ life was about much more than fried chicken. The man whose face became synonymous with “finger-lickin’ good” chicken used hard work and perseverance to become recognized as Kentucky’s most famous citizen.

Sanders delved into the restaurant business in Corbin, opening a lunchroom behind a service station. His restaurant grew rapidly, and his customers made fried chicken the most popular item on the menu. He might have worked in that café forever if it weren’t for the building of Interstate 75, forcing him to sell his place at auction.

In his 60s, Sanders traveled the U.S. showing restaurants how to make Colonel Sanders’ Kentucky Fried Chicken. While most men his age were retiring, Sanders continued doing what he did best, cooking and selling fried chicken.

Harland “Colonel” Sanders is portrayed by Henry Dowell of Nicholasville. He is the founder of The Gusto Theatre Company, a group dedicated to educational theatre and the performing of new works, as well as the classics. Dowell is an actor, director and playwright, with numerous credits spanning 25-years in theatre.

Also …. as a special treat for attendees, the Southwestern High School Girl’s Basketball Team will also be joining us as we will be recognizing them on their State Runner-up Title in the recent Sweet 16 Basketball Tournament at Rupp Arena.Lunch will be held at The Center for Rural Development and will begin at 12:00 (Noon).

Please make your plans to attend this very interesting luncheon.
