In 1984 a group of caring community individuals, committed to providing care for the terminally ill and their families, founded Somerset-Pulaski County Community Hospice. In January, 1987, the organization admitted its first patient. One year later Somerset-Pulaski County Community Hospice became a Medicare certified hospice provider. As the organization grew, the desire to offer hospice services beyond the boundaries of Pulaski County required a name change and in 1989 the organization became Hospice of Lake Cumberland. The agency now serves seven counties, Pulaski, Russell, Casey, McCreary, Wayne, Clinton, and Cumberland, and will provide care for approximately 600 patients in 2006.
Services, too, have been expanded from mainly emotional and spiritual support to a full range of multidisciplinary services designed to meet the physical, social, emotional and spiritual needs of the patient and family. Both paid staff and dedicated volunteers are available to provide the compassionate care and support delivered to Hospice families.
Hospice of Lake Cumberland is a non-profit, community-based hospice, certified by Medicare and Medicaid. The organization is a member of Kentucky Hospice Network, Kentucky Association of Hospice and Palliative Care, and National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization.
